Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a condition associated with mid to lower gastrointestinal tract. IBS majorly affects the functioning of the bowel. The most common symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain, discomfort; often relieved after passing wind or stool, abdominal bloating, chronic diarrhoea, and constipation sometimes alternating between both. Sometimes the symptoms of IBS can be embarrassing and distressing and can lead to infection, indigestion, stress and nutritional imbalance. Studies have identified the prevalence of IBS in 1 out of 5 Australian and is twice more common in females than males.
The exact cause of Irritable bowel syndrome is still unknown. It is believed that the sensitivity of nerve in the bowel, the environmental factor, chronic inflammation, abnormal bowel contraction and psychological factors can be factors related to IBS. According to AYURVEDA, IBS is called as “Grahani disease” which is mainly characterised by increased episodes of passing of unformed stool. Those who eat without knowing their body capacity, body constitution, seasonal variation in food habits are more prone to Irritable bowel syndrome.
According to Ayurveda, “Individuals who are in control of their tongue” means those who eat in non-uniform manner, who have very irregular meals and consume meals with different properties at same time often suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) OR GRAHNI disease. This behaviour and dietary habits lead to improper digestion and absorption of food its nutrients which in turn form toxic substances into the gut and cause. inflammation and abnormal contraction leading to Irritable Bowel Syndrome/ Grahani Disease.
Although there is no absolute cure in modern conventional medical sciences for IBS and is generally treated symptomatically. People get relief for short period of time and the disease relapse after some time but Ayurveda medicines and treatments have been found very effective in management of IBS and no side effects. The patient is assessed and prescribed with appropriate therapies and herbal medicines. The Ayurvedic health practitioner assess the individual’s level of Agni (Digestive fire and its imbalances) and provide the appropriate solution for removal of AMA doshas. The cleansing along with the herbs which improves the digestive capacity and herbs which excrete the undigested seated impurities from the Gut is believed to be the best and treatment of choice for treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome.
